Helping Nonprofits Turn Profits

Helping Nonprofits Turn Profits

Among the things I’ve been lucky enough to do in my professional life in Santa Fe, NM, two stand out: I’ve enjoyed a successful career in finance and have been involved with several nonprofits throughout the city and state. Sometimes, those two stories collide wherein I find myself serving on a nonprofit’s endowment committee. And while I love the...

Henry Ford, Labor Strikes, and Investing

The Big Three U.S. auto workers went on strike in September. Labor and management couldn’t come to an agreement about how to split the proceeds from producing automobiles. This is such a pivotal economic and political issue that the two leading presidential candidates visited Detroit within a day of each other. The struggle between auto labor and...

Grippy Mountain Bike Shoes

Like many people during the pandemic, I decided to pick up a new hobby. With basically everything shut down, and the outdoors being one of the only relatively safe spaces available to us, my quest led me to mountain biking. I love it — biking through the foothills surrounding Santa Fe is a blast… but it also involves some risk.

Small-cap, large-cap, index funds, oh my!

There’s been an interesting discrepancy between the stock market performances of U.S.-listed large vs. small-cap companies in 2023. The S&P 500, which comprises the largest 500 companies listed in the U.S., has gained 15% as of June 20th, while the Russell 2500, which includes much smaller companies, has only gained 6% in the same time period.

The Power of Long Term Investing

The Power of Long Term Investing

Long-term investment horizons are often talked about, but not always practiced. For most clients, investment goals are measured in years (or maybe even decades). But many investment professionals feel the need to prove their worth in quarterly increments (this can be for a host of varying reasons, but we see it all the time). At CDI, we feel that...

Lessons From A Helicopter Parent

Lessons From A Helicopter Parent

Shrewd investors often start out with long-term financial plans designed to meet their future needs — things like saving for college, retirement, etc. But sticking with the long-term plan becomes harder after years like 2022, in which many stock indices declined 20-30% with bonds down as well. As Mike Tyson said, “Everybody has a plan until they...
